COMPLETE SUMMARY OF BRETT GOLDSWORTHY AND HIS BOGUS COMPANY’S.
This guy’s supposed agreements in Sarawak, Malaysia, also need to be looked into. I have been trying to establish a small REDD pilot project in Sarawak since September 2009 and so was very interested when I first heard of Brett Goldsworthy’s projects in the area.
I immediately emailed him and asked which Malaysian tribal leaders he had signed up and the location of his projects. Unfortunately I received no reply.
Since that time I have discovered that neither the Sarawak State Government or any Dayak groups or NGOs working in the state have ever heard of this person or his company.
In contrast to Goldsworthy’s grandiose large scale projects I have been trying to establish a pilot project of 5,400 hectares around two Penan villages (details are available on REDD-Monitor.org and my own web site).
Of this area 3,000 hectares are to be protected forest and will be carbon audited while the remaining 2,400 hectares are an ‘agricultural land’ buffer zone where the people currently grow rice. I had previously lived in one of the Penan villages in the early 1990s conducting a very successful Permaculture based village development project, and in recognition of my assistance I had been given a Penan name after one of their revered headmen from the past.
I also speak basic Penan and have been adopted into one of the families in the village. My very first step was to go and talk to the people to see if they wanted me to proceed with a carbon offset project on their land, which is currently under a palm oil concession.
In December 2009 I established my company and by early 2010 I had managed to get the approval from the Sarawak State Government to start the project with the priviso that I contact the company with the oil palm concession for the area, KTS Plantations Sdn Bhd, and also get their agreement. I had originally been told by KTS that they would inform me of their decision in December 2010 but the announcement by Brett Goldsworthy of his extensive projects in the state made the Sarawak State Government very wary of carbon offset projects and they have advised KTS to ‘go slow’ in making any decision.
At my last meeting with KTS executives they wanted to know if I had any links with Mr Goldsworthy or his company and who I had to ‘report to’. It does not help matters that I am also based in Australia and also have the same first name. As the Chinese often put their surname first (Sarawak is about 1/3 Chinese descent) they may even have thought we were related.
I often get called ‘Mr Brett’ when I am over here. Currently the status of my project is unknown and my last communication with KTS is that I would be informed ‘in due course’.
In 2013 it is likely REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and forest Degradation) carbon offset projects will be included under the UN regulated offset market at which time the Federal Malaysian Government will control the size and location of future REDD projects.
They will most likely follow the ‘Pahang model’ where 230,000 of coastal peat swamp forest was declared a carbon offset area in a project instigated by Malaysian Airlines. Peat swamps have the highest density of carbon per hectare due to the large amount of carbon contained in peat soils.

I have hopes that if my pilot project proceeds it will demonstrate to the Federal Government a way to use REDD projects to give local people both access to traditional lands and also supply them with financial resources for development.
My first and only concern is for the local people, who fully support what I am trying to do and who see REDD as a preferred option to blockading or court action as a way to gain land rights and development assistance. I just hope that the recent publicity about this guy exposes his false claims regarding his Malaysian projects, and that the Sarawak State Government realises I have no connection or links with this person or his company and allows KTS Sdn Bhd to proceed with my proposed pilot project.
